What is this site?
This is my website. It is a collection of all the stuff I’ve got on the web, a place to share my thoughts, stuff I’m doing, and presentations I’ve done.
Ok, who are you?
My name is Dawn. I am an internet marketer, based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.
Tell me more.
Ok, well I grew up in the small town of Holland Landing, near Newmarket. I became enamoured with the Internet as soon as we got our first dial-up connection, and built my first website at 17.
During highschool, I had a brief period where I thought I wanted to save the world, so I enrolled in the Environmental Sciences program at the University of Guelph. I soon found out I could not save the world, but completed my degree in Natural Resources Management anyway.
Then I went on to do a certificate program in Web Design from Conestoga College. It was mostly a joke, but gave me a piece of paper saying I more-or-less knew what I was doing.
I got my first real job as a junior designer for RKD Web Studios. As my design and site building skills progressed, I became interested in other aspects of web site production, such as usability, accessibility, and search engine optimization. In 2008, I ended up leading the internet marketing division of RKD, Zero In.
From October 2009 to December 2010, I worked at Outspoken Media as a Senior Account Manager. From January 2011 to November 2012, I was the project manager and marketer at SpeakFeel Corporation – a mobile app development company.
I’m currently the Digital Marketing Manager at Desire2Learn, working with the designers and developers who produce our marketing websites. Here I get to play in things like SEO, usability, accessibility, content, and more. My team at work recently voted me as most likely to win the internet, and most likely to go insane if the internet went down.
Ok, what else?
I live in Kitchener with my husband, Adam, and our cats. I have a gluten intolerance. I watch Game of Thrones and Suits. In the summer I camp, in the winter I hibernate. Adam owns an IT support company in Waterloo Region, so we talk about computers a lot. We are co-organizers of the Waterloo-Wellington Webmakers’ meetup (WWW), after taking over the former Kitchener Waterloo Design Development Meetup (KWDM) and merging with the Guelph Web Maker Meetup (GWMM).
Can you help me with my website?
I’m not currently taking on any freelance projects, but I might be able to refer you to someone who can help. Get in touch.
